for this piece, I used watercolors because it would be easier to capture the fluidity of water when using water-based materials. water was the focal point in this piece so I found it really important to be able to render it in a realistic way. or at least create the same energy and flow with the water colors.

what is this piece about? how does it relate to your inquiry question?

My inquiry question is exploring overwhelm and all its stages, including the build, during, and after. This was the first thing I thought of when I thought of overwhelm. Feeling like your drowning or just being surrounded completly by substance when you are desbratly trying to organize and figure everything out. I tried to portray that the figure is fighting for their life. Hence why they sacrifice their head. Detaching it from their body in hopes to hold on just a little longer. Showing how sometimes when under stress we tend to put ourselves second and whatever the task at hand is first.

materials

For this piece, I used acrylic paint and sharpie. This piece's message wasn't as obvious as the other one. at least I was worried it wouldn't be clear. So I wanted to at least get the feeling across through the material. acrylic paint gives a very nice textured look once painted and I felt like it would add more of a heavy feeling to the painting. Whereas in the first piece I felt it was lighter as the paint was thinner and more transparent.

What is this piece about? how does it relate to your inquiry question?

My first piece was symbolic, For my next piece, I wanted to paint something that I go through on a daily both mentally and physically. I felt that putting my art into a more realistic setting would make it more real and hopefully relatable to more people. This relates not only to overwhelm but also to the pattern which gets most people stuck in stress. procrastination. Often I will avoid doing the work in front of me by writing a to-do list of everything I need to do later. This allows me to feel productive without actually having to do any work at the moment. which only adds to the cycle giving me more work that I need to do. while visually overwhelming me with all the work I haven't done.
